Following my Thursday article on the psychology of warning lights (Workshop #06), let’s move to action. Here’s one very simple reflex to adopt immediately so you’re never caught off guard again.
When a warning light suddenly appears, most riders do one of two things.
They either panic and imagine the worst, or they ignore it and hope it disappears.
Neither is the right first move.
The best first reflex is much simpler:
Capture the warning before you lose the context.
If it’s safe to do so, take a photo of the dash or TFT immediately.
Why does that matter so much?
Because once you cycle the ignition, ride a bit further, or let the bike cool down, the exact message, symbol, color, or combination of warnings may disappear or change. And when that happens, you’ve already lost one of the most useful clues.
That one photo can tell you:
- which warning actually appeared
- whether it was red, amber, or just informational
- whether more than one system was involved
- what message the bike displayed at that exact moment
Right after that, note three simple things:
- what the bike was doing when it appeared
- whether the bike felt different
- whether the startup had been strong or weak
That gives you a much better starting point than guessing from memory later.
A warning light without any change in how the bike runs is not the same situation as a warning light that appears together with rough running, heat, weak braking feel, or obvious mechanical symptoms.
And if you get several strange warnings together after a weak start, battery voltage should already be part of your thinking before you start blaming half the bike.
Why memory alone is not enough
Under stress, it’s very easy to mix things up. Was the light amber or red? Which symbol came on first? On a GS LC, the order in which warnings and messages appear can be a crucial clue. That’s why a photo matters so much. It’s your black box.
So this Sunday Quick Check is simple:
See it. Save it. Context first. Guess later, or better yet, don’t guess at all.
That one habit can save you a lot of confusion and a lot of money.
