Chris Bach Workshop #20- GS/GSA LC – Why a Fault Code Does Not Always Identify the Failed Part

You connect MotoScan, scan the motorcycle, and a fault code appears.

At that moment, it is very tempting to believe that the motorcycle has just handed you the name of the part that needs replacing.

Unfortunately, fault codes are not that generous.

A diagnostic tool does not examine the motorcycle, remove components, inspect connectors, or test the wiring. It simply reports what one of the control units has detected.

That distinction is essential.

A code usually tells you that a signal, value, or electrical condition was outside the expected range.

It may indicate:

a signal that is missing
a value that is too high or too low
an electrical circuit that is open or shorted
communication that was interrupted
a condition that appeared temporarily

What it does not automatically tell you is why that condition occurred.

The component named in the description may be faulty, but it may also be working perfectly and simply unable to communicate correctly with the motorcycle.

Imagine that MotoScan reports a fault related to an ignition coil.

The immediate reaction is often:

“The ignition coil has failed.”

Possibly.

But the same fault could also be caused by:

a connector that is not fully seated
a damaged terminal
a broken or strained wire
poor power or ground supply
moisture or corrosion
a fault created during recent maintenance
an intermittent connection

Replacing the coil without checking the circuit first could leave you with a new coil, the same fault, and a lighter wallet.

The diagnostic tool has pointed you toward an area of the motorcycle.

It has not completed the investigation for you.

Modern motorcycles constantly compare information from different sensors and control units.

A problem in one area can therefore create fault codes somewhere else.

A sensor may report an abnormal value because another system has changed the conditions around it. A control unit may lose communication because the battery voltage dropped. A fault may appear after a connector was disturbed during unrelated maintenance.

This is why reading one code in isolation can sometimes be misleading.

The code is still useful, but it must be placed in context.

Some fault codes are active.

Others are intermittent or stored from an earlier event.

A weak battery, a disconnected component, maintenance work, or a temporary voltage drop may leave a code in memory even after the original condition has disappeared.

That does not mean stored codes should be ignored.

It means their status matters.

Before clearing anything, it is useful to understand:

whether the fault is currently present
whether it has occurred repeatedly
when the symptoms appeared
whether work was recently carried out in that area
whether several codes may share the same cause

Pressing “Clear fault memory” immediately may remove information that could have helped explain what happened.

Sometimes the most useful clue disappears because the first instinct was to make the screen look clean again.

MotoScan can provide extremely useful information.

It can help identify the system involved, read fault memory, display available live values, perform service functions, and guide further checks.

But the quality of the diagnosis still depends on the person using it.

The correct workshop logic remains:

Observe → read → understand → verify → act

Not:

Read code → order part → hope

A fault code should narrow the search, not end it.

The most important question is often not “What does the code say?”

The better questions are:

What exactly was happening when the fault appeared?

Is the fault active or stored?

Was anything recently disconnected, removed, washed, repaired, or adjusted?

Can the suspected component and its circuit be checked before it is replaced?

Those questions often save more time and money than the code itself.

A diagnostic tool becomes truly useful when it is combined with observation, mechanical logic, and a refusal to guess.

The code is a clue. It is not the verdict.
