After looking at how the RDC system works, the signs of sensor aging, the precautions to take during a tire change, sensor replacement, and RDC warning diagnosis, one essential question remains:
What should you do when a loss of tire pressure is detected?
This is exactly the type of situation where the RDC system proves its value.
Detecting a pressure loss early can help prevent damage to the tire, protect the wheel, and avoid being stranded on the side of the road.
First Step: Confirm That There Really Is a Pressure Loss
Before imagining the worst, you should verify that the pressure loss is real.
A few simple checks can often provide the answer quickly:
- Check the pressure with a reliable tire gauge.
- Compare the value displayed by the RDC system with the actual measurement.
- Check the pressure when cold, then again a few hours later or the following morning.
- Observe whether the pressure loss is gradual or rapid.
A slight variation caused by temperature changes is normal.
However, a regular loss of pressure deserves further investigation.
Where Should You Look for a Leak?
The most common cause remains a punctured tire.
Carefully inspect:
- The tread area.
- The tire grooves.
- Any nail, screw, or foreign object.
- The tire sidewalls.
- The valve stem.
Some punctures are very difficult to see and can go completely unnoticed during a simple visual inspection.
The Soapy Water Method
This is often the most effective method.
Prepare a mixture of soap and water and apply it:
- To the tread area.
- Around the valve stem.
- At the base of the valve stem.
- On the valve core.
If bubbles appear, the leak has usually been located.
This method also works very well when the pressure loss is slow and difficult to identify.
Don’t Forget the Valve Stem
A leak does not necessarily come from the tire itself.
It may be caused by:
- A loose valve core.
- A worn valve seal.
- A damaged valve stem.
- Corrosion around the valve stem.
On motorcycles equipped with the RDC system, the valve stem is an integral part of the sensor assembly.
Its condition therefore deserves special attention.
Not All Punctures Are the Same
Depending on the type of damage, the solution can be very different.
The most common situations include:
- Nail or screw punctures.
- Small punctures in the center of the tread.
- Larger cuts.
- Sidewall damage.
- Damage caused by an impact to the wheel.
The location and severity of the damage often determine whether a repair is possible.
Plug Repairs
This is probably the most common emergency repair used by riders.
Advantages:
- Fast.
- Inexpensive.
- Can be performed at the roadside.
- Widely used by travelers.
When properly installed in a suitable puncture, a plug can allow you to continue your trip quickly.
However, it is not suitable for every type of damage.
Internal Patch-Plug Repairs
This method generally requires:
- Tire removal.
- An internal inspection.
- A repair performed from inside the tire.
It is often considered a more durable solution than a simple plug repair.
However, repairability still depends on the type and location of the puncture.
When Should a Tire Be Replaced?
Some situations require replacement.
For example:
- Significant sidewall damage.
- A major cut.
- Damaged carcass construction.
- Damage located too close to the edge of the tire.
- Multiple existing repairs.
When in doubt, safety must always come first.
What Not to Do
Continue Riding on an Underinflated Tire
An underinflated tire flexes much more with every rotation.
This can cause:
- Excessive heat buildup.
- Rapid deterioration of the tire carcass.
- Reduced steering precision.
- Heavier handling when entering corners.
- Increased braking distances.
- Accelerated shoulder wear.
- A risk of bead unseating or tire failure if pressure becomes extremely low.
On a loaded GS/GSA, with a passenger, luggage, or at higher speeds, these stresses become even greater.
Insufficient tire pressure is not simply a comfort or wear issue. It can quickly become a genuine safety concern.
Ignore an RDC Warning
The RDC system is designed to draw your attention to a potentially abnormal situation.
Even if the warning disappears later, it is still advisable to understand the cause.
Never Repair a Damaged Sidewall
A tire sidewall flexes constantly during operation.
Unlike the tread area, it is subjected to continuous flexing and significant stresses.
A cut, tear, or puncture in the sidewall can weaken the tire’s internal structure.
A damaged sidewall must not be repaired. The tire must be replaced.
If this happens during a trip, it is safer to stop riding and contact roadside assistance or a recovery service.
Damaged sidewall = stop riding and replace the tire.
Delay Inspection and Repairs
A small leak today can become a complete breakdown tomorrow.
The Small Kit That Can Save a Trip
Many GS/GSA owners routinely carry:
- A tire plug kit.
- A compact air compressor.
- A reliable tire gauge.
- A valve core removal tool.
- Spare valve cores.
- A compact flashlight.
This equipment takes up very little space and can prevent a lot of complications far from home.
