Chris Bach – Workshop Note / Quick Check #11 – GS/GSA LC (R1200 LC & R1250) – The Tool Check Most Riders Never Do

We often talk about torque specs, parts, consumables, and maintenance procedures.

But there’s one much simpler thing that many riders completely overlook:
the actual condition of their tools.

And honestly, on a GS/GSA, a worn or poor-quality tool can turn a simple maintenance job into a real headache.

Here’s a very simple workshop habit that can save you a LOT of frustration on a GS/GSA:

Before starting maintenance, take 60 seconds to inspect the actual condition of your tools.

It’s not just about whether you “have” the tool.
It’s about whether the tool is still GOOD.

Because on these bikes, worn tools create problems fast:

• Rounded Torx fasteners

• Damaged bolts

• Slipping bits

• Inaccurate torque readings

• Scratched parts

• Wasted time

And the craziest part?
Most riders blame the motorcycle… when the real problem is the tool.

A worn Torx bit may still “fit” the fastener.
But under load, small wear becomes a huge difference.

The same applies to:

• Cheap Allen keys

• Loose extensions

• Worn ratchets

• Low-quality torque wrenches

Good maintenance is not about owning 500 tools.
It’s about owning the RIGHT tools, in good condition, for the RIGHT jobs.

That’s also why building a real workshop takes time.
You do not need to own everything on day one.

You build it progressively:

• Essential tools first

• Quality where it truly matters

• Specialty tools when the motorcycle requires them

That philosophy is exactly how I structured the equipment sections inside my GS/GSA Maintenance Guide.

The guide includes:

• A complete workshop tool kit

• A travel survival kit (tools and spare parts to carry on the bike)

• A progressive 7-month workshop equipment plan

The goal:
help riders avoid wasting money on useless toolboxes while progressively building a workshop setup that makes maintenance easier, safer, and more professional.

Because honestly…
sometimes the difference between a smooth 20-minute job and a completely ruined afternoon comes down to ONE proper tool.

And that’s exactly the kind of small workshop habit that separates random DIY work from real workshop logic.

You do not become mechanically independent overnight.
You become independent by understanding your motorcycle, choosing the right tools, and avoiding the simple mistakes that often become expensive ones.

That’s the entire goal of the GS/GSA Maintenance Guide: helping every R1200 LC and R1250 owner work properly, progressively, and with confidence.
