Chris Bach Workshop – GS/GSA LC – RDC 5: What Should You Do When the RDC Warning Light Comes On?

The RDC system is one of those features that is easy to forget about… until a warning light suddenly appears.

However, it plays an important role in rider safety. By continuously monitoring tire pressure, it can quickly detect a loss of pressure that may affect handling, braking, motorcycle stability, and even tire wear.

It is a valuable safety aid, but when a warning appears, you should not immediately assume the sensor has failed. The system may simply be reporting genuinely low tire pressure, a temporary loss of communication, a sensor weakened by cold weather, or a fault recorded elsewhere within the RDC system.

After looking at how the system works, the signs of sensor aging, the precautions to take during a tire change, and sensor replacement, there is one situation that every GS/GSA owner encounters sooner or later:

The RDC warning light suddenly appearing on the dashboard.

The first reaction is often to assume that the sensor is dead.

However, that is not always the case.

Before ordering a new sensor or removing a wheel, a few simple checks can often help identify the source of the problem.

Before doing anything else, carefully observe the information displayed by your motorcycle. Depending on your GS/GSA model and the type of instrument cluster it is equipped with, RDC information may be available in different locations. Take the time to review all the available information before drawing any conclusions.

Not all RDC warnings mean the same thing.

The first step is to determine whether:

  • The pressure is displayed but reported as too low.
  • Only one wheel is no longer displaying pressure.
  • Both wheels have disappeared from the display.
  • The warning only appears when cold or during cold weather.
  • The display returns after a few miles or kilometers of riding.

These details already provide valuable clues for diagnosis.

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one.

Before suspecting a sensor or the RDC system:

  • Check the pressure with a reliable gauge.
  • Verify that there is no obvious leak.
  • Inspect the valve stem.
  • Check the overall condition of the tire.

An RDC warning may simply be reporting exactly what the system was designed to detect: a genuine loss of tire pressure.

When:

  • The front wheel disappears by itself.
  • Or the rear wheel disappears by itself.

And the problem becomes recurrent, the sensor for that wheel becomes a serious possibility.

This does not automatically mean that the sensor has completely failed.

However, it does justify:

  • Reading any stored fault codes.
  • Checking the age of the sensor.
  • Verifying sensor communication.

When both pressure values disappear simultaneously, the problem is not necessarily caused by both sensors.

It may be worth checking:

  • The condition of the motorcycle battery.
  • The presence of other electronic faults.
  • The RDC system itself.
  • The related modules and connections.

The chances of two sensors failing at exactly the same moment are relatively low.

A sensor nearing the end of its life may work normally during summer and become unstable during the first cold mornings of the year.

Typical symptoms include:

  • The tire pressure taking a long time to appear.
  • A wheel disappearing and then reappearing.
  • An intermittent fault.

Cold weather does not necessarily create the failure.

It may simply reveal a sensor that was already becoming weak.

A common mistake is ordering a new sensor immediately after a single warning.

Before making any decision, it is better to verify:

  • Whether the fault returns regularly.
  • Under what conditions it appears.
  • Whether the actual tire pressure is correct.
  • Whether fault codes are stored in the control unit.

A single isolated warning does not automatically mean that a component must be replaced.

A tool such as:

  • MotoScan.
  • GS-911.
  • BMW diagnostic equipment.

can often provide much more information than a simple dashboard warning light.

Depending on the system and the fault involved, it may be possible to:

  • Read stored fault codes.
  • Identify the affected sensor.
  • Verify RDC communication.
  • Check registered sensor identifiers.

A few minutes of diagnosis can sometimes prevent an unnecessary replacement.

Before replacing any component:

  • Check the actual tire pressure.
  • Observe the system’s behavior carefully.
  • Determine whether one or both wheels are affected.
  • Take weather conditions into account.
  • Read any stored fault codes whenever possible.

In many cases, a correct diagnosis costs less than replacing parts too quickly.
